Poznań: from mobile killing unit to regional Gestapo
The transition from mobile police operations to a permanent Gestapo headquarters, Fort VII and the murder of psychiatric patients in the Wartheland.
Scope note. This regional page connects only the people and mechanisms already documented in the current source-reviewed cluster. It is not a complete list of perpetrators or crimes in the region.
Helmut Bischoff’s career connects command of Einsatzkommando 1/IV with leadership of the Gestapo headquarters in Poznań. Under that regional apparatus, Fort VII became a site of detention, interrogation and execution linked with field offices and killing sites in nearby forests.
Herbert Lange’s unit connects Fort VII with the murder of patients from psychiatric institutions and the use of gas vans. The later transfer of this experience to Chełmno is relevant to the continuity of personnel and technique, but the regional page remains centred on the Poznań and Wartheland phase.
Scope limitation: the two profiles do not encompass every Gestapo official, guard, civil authority or participant in the murders. Investigative files document an apparatus and command positions; they do not prove that either man personally carried out every killing associated with Fort VII.
