Jakob Lölgen

acquitted in 1966 1897–1980

Jakob Lölgen served as commander of an Einsatzkommando 16 detachment in Bydgoszcz. The profile reconstructs the person’s function in Bydgoszcz and Gdańsk Pomerania through documented office, decisions, supervision or operational conduct. It does not assign every crime committed by an institution or region to one individual.

Confirmed findings

  • Lölgen commanded the Bydgoszcz detachment of Einsatzkommando 16 in the autumn of 1939.
  • The detachment participated in selecting prisoners and executing members of the Polish intelligentsia.
  • The judgment of 1 April 1966 confirmed the defendants’ participation in the apparatus of persecution but acquitted them by accepting a defence based on obedience to orders.

Place in the chain of responsibility

The case shows a local link connecting lists, arrests, selection and execution. It does not transfer to Lölgen the entire responsibility of the Selbstschutz or of every formation operating in Bydgoszcz.

Key events and mechanisms

  • selections at the Bydgoszcz internment camp in the autumn of 1939
  • executions of members of Bydgoszcz’s Polish elites
No victim-count ranking

The circle records authority, function and agency. Several profiles may describe different parts of the same persecution chain, so profile-level totals must not be added together.

Postwar accountability

After the war Lölgen returned to criminal-police work in Trier. He stood trial in Munich with Horst Eichler in 1966 and was acquitted.

Limits of the evidence

The candidate had been deferred in wave 3. Publication became possible because new and independent material was found: an IPN description of the judgment files, a later analysis of the trial and an IPN educational publication. Variant spellings of his surname are retained as aliases.

The source set combines institutional, archival, trial or scholarly material from at least two independent publishers.
