Paul Blobel
Paul Blobel served as commander of Sonderkommando 4a and organiser of Aktion 1005. The profile reconstructs the person’s function in occupied Ukraine and mass-grave sites across occupied eastern Europe through documented office, decisions, supervision or operational conduct. It does not assign every crime committed by an institution or region to one individual.
Confirmed findings
- After the invasion of the Soviet Union, Blobel commanded Sonderkommando 4a of Einsatzgruppe C in occupied Ukraine.
- His unit carried out the Babi Yar massacre on 29–30 September 1941 and other mass shootings of Jewish civilians and people classified as enemies.
- In June 1942 Heinrich Müller assigned Blobel to Aktion 1005, which opened mass graves, burned bodies and murdered many forced labourers to conceal evidence.
Place in the chain of responsibility
Blobel's responsibility covered both an operational killing unit and a later programme to destroy evidence. The profile retains the responsibility of superior RSHA authorities and participating local units.
Key events and mechanisms
- command of Sonderkommando 4a after June 1941
- Babi Yar massacre, 29–30 September 1941
- direction of Aktion 1005, from June 1942
The circle records authority, function and agency. Several profiles may describe different parts of the same persecution chain, so profile-level totals must not be added together.
Postwar accountability
An American military tribunal convicted Blobel in the Einsatzgruppen Trial of war crimes, crimes against humanity and criminal-organisation membership and sentenced him to death. He was hanged at Landsberg during the night of 7–8 June 1951.
Limits of the evidence
Because Aktion 1005 destroyed evidence, exact totals remain difficult to establish. The profile avoids assigning Blobel every mass grave processed by units beyond the documented programme chain.
