Hermann Höfle
Hermann Höfle served as chief of staff for Operation Reinhard and coordinator of deportation logistics. The profile reconstructs the person’s function in General Government, especially the Lublin and Warsaw districts through documented office, decisions, supervision or operational conduct. It does not assign every crime committed by an institution or region to one individual.
Confirmed findings
- Höfle served as a senior member of Odilo Globocnik's staff and coordinated staffing, railway schedules and deportations for Operation Reinhard.
- On 22 July 1942 he delivered the deportation order to the Warsaw Jewish Council and helped oversee the mass deportation from the Warsaw ghetto to Treblinka.
- His encrypted message of 11 January 1943 recorded 1,274,166 victims at four Operation Reinhard sites through the end of 1942.
Place in the chain of responsibility
Höfle converted extermination policy into schedules, personnel assignments and coordinated transports. His telegram documents his central knowledge and role, but it records the output of the whole Operation Reinhard apparatus rather than killings personally carried out by him.
Key events and mechanisms
- the Grossaktion in the Warsaw ghetto from July to September 1942
- the Höfle Telegram of January 1943 and the Erntefest massacre in November 1943
The circle records authority, function and agency. Several profiles may describe different parts of the same persecution chain, so profile-level totals must not be added together.
Postwar accountability
Höfle was detained with Globocnik in 1945 but released and later lived in Salzburg. Austrian authorities arrested him in January 1961; he hanged himself in a Vienna prison cell on 21 August 1962 before trial.
Limits of the evidence
Deportation estimates from the Warsaw ghetto vary, and the total in Höfle's telegram is a report for the whole operation. His responsibility is clearest for documented coordination, orders and logistics and should not replace the separate responsibility of camp, police, railway and local commanders.
