Place in the chain of responsibility

The profile connects local command with personal violence described by witnesses. Institution, place and individual perpetrator are distinguished: membership in the Selbstschutz does not suffice to attribute every local crime to every member. The circle records authority, function and agency. Several profiles may describe different parts of the same persecution chain, so profile-level totals must not be added together.

Postwar accountability

According to the Institute for Western Affairs, the summary court in Bydgoszcz found him guilty of murdering 186 residents of Wyrzysk county. The IPN catalogue identifies Nakło as the place of trial. Following the 1953 judgment, the death sentence was carried out in February 1954. The judicial figure is not the total of all local Selbstschutz victims. Limits of the evidence

Witness accounts were collected after the war; details from Jan Topór’s testimony are not presented as findings from our own examination of the original files. The German rape conviction and the Polish murder conviction were separate proceedings. No execution day or method is given without examined documentation. The birth date comes from a reproduced photograph caption, not a civil register. (Institutional source: podstrony.iz.poznan.pl; Institutional source: towarzystwolobzenica.pl)
