Hans-Joachim Böhme

sentenced to 15 years; released on health grounds shortly before his death in 1968 1909–1968

Hans-Joachim Böhme served as head of the Gestapo in Tilsit and commander of Einsatzkommando Tilsit. The profile reconstructs the person’s function in Tilsit, Lithuania, the Suwałki region and Augustów through documented office, decisions, supervision or operational conduct. It does not assign every crime committed by an institution or region to one individual.

Confirmed findings

  • The Ulm Regional Court judgment establishes that Böhme headed the Tilsit Gestapo office, to which border posts and an executive department dealing with Jews, political opponents and forced labourers, among others, were subordinate.
  • After receiving an order from the commander of Einsatzgruppe A, Böhme transmitted to subordinate officers instructions to conduct mass executions in the border zone.
  • The court found it proven that Böhme ordered Wolfgang Ilges and Waldemar Macholl to carry out an operation in the Augustów area, as a result of which 316 people were murdered between 26 June and 10 July 1941.
  • On 29 August 1958 he was sentenced to 15 years' penal servitude for aiding collective murder in 3,907 cases; pretrial detention was credited toward the sentence.

Place in the chain of responsibility

Böhme shows how an ordinary regional Gestapo office was transformed into a mobile execution unit and used a network of border police posts. The profile bases responsibility on specific instructions reconstructed by the court, not on the unit's victim count alone.

Key events and mechanisms

  • taking charge of the Tilsit Gestapo office in October 1940
  • formation of Einsatzkommando Tilsit after 22 June 1941
  • issuing instructions concerning the Augustów operation in summer 1941
  • the Ulm trial from April to August 1958 and the fifteen-year sentence
  • release due to illness in May 1968 and death on 31 May 1968
No victim-count ranking

The circle records authority, function and agency. Several profiles may describe different parts of the same persecution chain, so profile-level totals must not be added together.

Postwar accountability

After concealing part of his past during denazification, Böhme was arrested in August 1956. Ulm Regional Court sentenced him on 29 August 1958 to 15 years' penal servitude and ten years' loss of civil rights. He was released for health reasons in May 1968 and died on 31 May 1968.

Limits of the evidence

The judgment used the legal construction of aiding and abetting and did not cover every murder committed by Einsatzkommando Tilsit; some charges ended in acquittal. The profile distinguishes Böhme's proven instructions, including the Augustów case, from operations carried out independently by other offices and formations.
