Rudolf Lange

never tried; died in Poznań in 1945, probably by suicide, although a combat death cannot be excluded 1910–1945

Rudolf Lange served as commander of Einsatzkommando 2 and commander of the Security Police and SD in Latvia. The profile reconstructs the person’s function in Latvia, especially Riga, and the Baltic region through documented office, decisions, supervision or operational conduct. It does not assign every crime committed by an institution or region to one individual.

Crimes against humanityHolocaust

Confirmed findings

  • Lange commanded Einsatzkommando 2 and from December 1941 headed the Security Police and SD apparatus in Latvia.
  • He took part in the Rumbula massacres and oversaw arrests, executions and the Jungfernhof and Salaspils camp system.
  • At the Wannsee Conference he represented the occupied Baltic region as an officer with direct experience of mass killing operations.

Place in the chain of responsibility

Lange combined mobile killing-unit command with territorial police authority, connecting policy coordination to implementation in Latvia. Regional totals include actions by German subordinates and Latvian auxiliaries and cannot be treated as a count of killings he personally carried out.

Key events and mechanisms

  • the Rumbula massacres on 30 November and 8 December 1941, in which approximately 25,000 people were murdered
  • the operation of the KdS and Einsatzkommando 2 apparatus, including executions and the Jungfernhof and Salaspils camps
No victim-count ranking

The circle records authority, function and agency. Several profiles may describe different parts of the same persecution chain, so profile-level totals must not be added together.

Postwar accountability

Lange remained in senior Security Police posts until the final months of the war. He died at Poznań on 23 February 1945 during the Soviet siege, probably by suicide to avoid capture, although a combat death cannot be excluded; he never faced trial.

Limits of the evidence

The approximately 25,000 victims at Rumbula form part of a broader total associated with Einsatzkommando 2 and the Latvian KdS. Sources are also not conclusive about whether Lange died by suicide or in combat.
