Kurt Franz
Kurt Franz served as deputy commandant and final commandant of the Treblinka II extermination camp. The profile reconstructs the person’s function in Treblinka in occupied Poland through documented office, decisions, supervision or operational conduct. It does not assign every crime committed by an institution or region to one individual.
Confirmed findings
- Franz previously served in the T4 killing programme and was then assigned to Bełżec and Treblinka under Operation Reinhard.
- At Treblinka he supervised prisoner labour, exercised direct violence and became the camp's final commandant after the August 1943 revolt.
- A Düsseldorf court convicted him of participation in collective murder and of individual murders and attempted murders.
Place in the chain of responsibility
Franz's responsibility combines operational command with personally documented brutality. The camp-wide number of people murdered describes the institution in which he served and later commanded; it is not a separate personal total.
Key events and mechanisms
- In 1942 he was transferred through Operation Reinhard from Bełżec to Treblinka.
- In August 1943 he became the third and last commandant of Treblinka and supervised its final phase and dismantling.
- On 3 September 1965 the Düsseldorf court sentenced him to life imprisonment.

Postwar accountability
Franz lived in West Germany until his arrest in December 1959. He received a life sentence in 1965, was released for health reasons in 1993 and died in 1998.
Limits of the evidence
The court finding of participation in the murder of at least 300,000 people is not identical to the full estimated number murdered at Treblinka. Camp-wide estimates and the different periods in which Franz served as deputy and commandant must remain distinct.
