Josef Kramer served as commandant of Natzweiler-Struthof, Birkenau and Bergen-Belsen. Confirmed findings

Kramer served in several concentration camps before commanding Natzweiler-Struthof, the Birkenau camp sector and finally Bergen-Belsen.
At Natzweiler he personally gassed prisoners selected for August Hirt's anatomical collection, and at Birkenau he supervised selections during the deportation of Hungarian Jews.
As commandant of Bergen-Belsen he presided over catastrophic overcrowding, starvation and epidemic disease until British liberation.

Place in the chain of responsibility

Kramer's responsibility includes both personal killing and command over camp systems in which selection, starvation and disease caused mass death. Deaths at each camp also involved wider SS policy and subordinate camp personnel and should not be reduced to a single personal total.

Postwar accountability

British forces arrested Kramer at Bergen-Belsen. The Belsen Trial convicted him of crimes at Auschwitz and Bergen-Belsen and sentenced him to death on 17 November 1945; he was hanged at Hameln on 13 December 1945.

Some secondary accounts differ by one day on the execution date; the Polish profile follows the trial and execution records. Death totals for Bergen-Belsen and the Hungarian action at Birkenau describe institutional crimes under his command, not killings all performed personally by Kramer.
