Hans-Joachim Riecke
Hans-Joachim Riecke served as head of the agricultural section of Economic Staff East and senior food-policy official. Riecke helped turn Backe's food policy into administrative instructions for extraction and allocation in the East. The resulting starvation involved military commands, occupation authorities and supply agencies, so the full effects of the policy cannot be assigned to him alone.

Postwar accountability
Riecke was interned from May 1945 until 1949. A denazification proceeding sentenced him to two years in 1950 but credited his internment, and he later returned to work in the agricultural trade; he died in 1986.

The planned and realised death tolls associated with the Hunger Plan differ greatly, and the Polish profile warns against confusing Riecke's functional responsibility with all starvation deaths. Some rank details in the earlier record required correction during the Polish research.
