Hans-Adolf Prützmann served as Higher SS and Police Leader in Ostland and later in southern occupied Soviet territories. The profile reconstructs the person’s function in Baltic territories and occupied Ukraine through documented office, decisions, supervision or operational conduct. It does not assign every crime committed by an institution or region to one individual.

Confirmed findings

  • Prützmann served as HSSPF Ostland and Russia-North in 1941 and was then transferred south as HSSPF Russia-South and later supreme SS and police commander in Ukraine.
  • His posts gave him authority over SS, Security Police and Order Police structures engaged in anti-Jewish actions and so-called anti-partisan operations.
  • A report dated 26 December 1942 recorded 363,211 murdered Jews under the language of combating bands.

Place in the chain of responsibility

Prützmann occupied the regional command layer between Himmler and the police and killing units. The report demonstrates the scale of crimes within his command system, but individual shootings were planned and performed by subordinate units with their own commanders.

Postwar accountability

British forces captured Prützmann near Lüneburg in May 1945. He killed himself with a concealed cyanide capsule while in custody and was never tried.

Limits of the evidence

Sources differ between 16 and 21 May 1945 for his death. The December 1942 figure is a command report covering a broad apparatus and cannot be presented as a personal tally of killings committed by Prützmann.
