Wyszanów: women and children in an attacked cellar

Wyszanów is the site of a crime whose toll must be read with particular care. Numbers describing one shelter, the whole village and later deaths are not interchangeable. The article preserves differences between the studies used: certainty about the crime itself does not permit a single detailed sequence to be made from contradictory versions. [1] [2]

Editorial account based on the sources listed below. Sources checked: 5 September 2026.

Victims and toll
In Marek Rezler's study: 22 people killed in the locality, and 24 including two victims of a convoy. The toll for the cellar itself differs between accounts.
Perpetrators
Soldiers of the German Wehrmacht; the exact identification of the subunit remains probable in the IPN study.
Documented methods
grenades thrown into a cellar holding civilians — witness accounts · setting buildings on fire · killing residents and detainees

Basis for the facts and their qualifications: [1] [2]

The cellar as a place of refuge

Rezler describes grenades thrown into Marcin Szyszka's cellar and later deaths of the wounded. He counts 22 people killed in the village and two victims of a convoy. These ranges of the toll must not be treated as identical. [2]

Differences in the accounts

Paweł Żołądek compares divergent accounts. Stanisława Woś said that 21 people were in the cellar and three survived. Other accounts count victims differently, while a United Nations Commission document highlights death in fires. The difference does not allow all those killed to be assigned the same method of death without further investigation. [1]

How a cautious account is made

First, it is necessary to establish whether the data concern the cellar, the whole locality, a transport of detainees, or later deaths. Only then can figures be compared. Here we keep the authors' names with differing tolls and do not add individual values. Adding them could count again people wounded in the cellar who died outside the village. [2] [1]

The nature of the crime

An attack on a civilian shelter justifies Wyszanów's inclusion in a collection of particularly cruel acts. That does not require judging the perpetrators' psychology or adopting the highest number of victims encountered. The account focuses on defenseless residents and specific actions by German soldiers, as documented in the cited publications. [2] [1]

Limits of the findings

The number killed in the cellar, later deaths, and the method of death for some people differ among accounts. The identification of a specific subunit in the IPN study is hypothetical, so we do not present it as certain. [1] [2]

How we assess sources

The evidence base consists primarily of Polish scholarly publications, investigative findings, archives, museums and documented witness accounts. Reliability is assessed through the document’s provenance, scholarly method and the ability to check the finding. Statements by perpetrators and family accounts of perpetrators require especially critical comparison with other material. Two pages from the same institution may repeat one finding; they are not automatically treated as independent confirmation.
