Sikory-Tomkowięta: families shot and people in a burning cellar
13 July 1943 · Torture, maiming and killing of defenceless people
Sikory-Tomkowięta are an important example of verifying an established account of a crime. Analysis of investigative material allowed a more precise account of the course of events, but did not close the victim list. The author of the study clearly distinguishes certain people from probable ones. We retain that distinction and do not treat the number on the monument as an automatic resolution. [1]
Editorial account based on the sources listed below. Sources checked: 5 September 2026.
- Victims and toll
- 45 victims regarded as certain; a total up to 55 is possible.
- Perpetrators
- Müller’s German police group, Gestapo officers and local gendarmes.
- Documented methods
- confining women and children · shooting families · death in a burning house
Deception and separation of residents
The Germans surrounded the village and gathered residents under the pretext of a document check. Women and children were locked up, while men were forced to dig a pit. After plunder, the killing of successive groups began. [1]
Fire after the shootings
According to the reconstruction, five women and children locked in a cellar died in a burning house. The author considers it probable that the men were shot at the end, after being forced to watch the deaths of their relatives. We retain the degree of certainty about that sequence in the account. [1]
The list remains open
The analysis identifies additional probable victims, mainly the youngest children. We do not add numbers from successive parts of the narrative together, because they are not complete, disjoint lists. The deaths of entire families may have made their later composition more difficult to reconstruct. [1]
Limits of the findings
The count and sequence of parts of the execution remain uncertain. The article relies on Paweł Niziołek’s critical study, not on independently read files. [1]

How we assess sources
The evidence base consists primarily of Polish scholarly publications, investigative findings, archives, museums and documented witness accounts. Reliability is assessed through the document’s provenance, scholarly method and the ability to check the finding. Statements by perpetrators and family accounts of perpetrators require especially critical comparison with other material. Two pages from the same institution may repeat one finding; they are not automatically treated as independent confirmation.
