Rycerka Górna: the crime in the Czaniecki hamlet
7 April 1945 · Burning people alive and killings during pacifications
In the Czaniecki hamlet, residents died shortly before the end of the occupation. In reconstructing events, the arrival of the German unit must be distinguished from the day of the massacre. An IPN study identifies two successive days but dates the murder itself to 7 April. The new memorial follows that date as well. [1]

- Perpetrators
- German soldiers; the unit is not identified in the source used.
- Documented methods

The correct date
Soldiers arrived on 6 April. Soviet partisans attacked them the next day. After the partisans withdrew, the Germans set homes and farm buildings on fire. The source identifies collective responsibility as the principle applied against residents. [1]
Murdered families
The IPN lists victims from the Płoskonka, Szczotka, Słowiak, Biernat and Czaniecki families. It gives a combined count, distinguishing those killed by gunfire from those burned alive. It does not determine the manner of death of every person, however, so we do not describe all victims as burned. [1]
A common grave
The bodies were buried in a collective grave in the cemetery at Rajcza. The IPN article accompanied the unveiling of a memorial in 2025. It records families and the burial place but does not identify the German unit. We do not remedy that gap by assigning a unit solely on the basis of the front’s location. [1]
Limits of the findings
The date range has been corrected: 6 April concerns the unit’s arrival; the massacre occurred on 7 April. The division of ten victims between methods has not been determined. [1]

How we assess sources
The evidence base consists primarily of Polish scholarly publications, investigative findings, archives, museums and documented witness accounts. Reliability is assessed through the document’s provenance, scholarly method and the ability to check the finding. Statements by perpetrators and family accounts of perpetrators require especially critical comparison with other material. Two pages from the same institution may repeat one finding; they are not automatically treated as independent confirmation.
