Piaśnica 1939 — mass executions, identification of victims and destruction of evidence
autumn 1939; destruction of evidence in 1944 · Torture, maiming and killing of defenceless people
The Piaśnica forests near Wejherowo were one of the main sites of mass executions in Pomerania during the first months of the German occupation. Institutional sources connect the crime with Einsatzkommando 16, SS-Wachsturmbann “Eimann” and the Selbstschutz. We do not give one final victim total: the records of the local Selbstschutz were destroyed, and in 1944 the Germans exhumed and burned bodies. [2] [3] [1]
Editorial account based on the sources listed below. Sources checked: 5 September 2026.
- Victims and toll
- Different victim groups, including Polish civilians and Polish and German psychiatric hospital patients. For the state of research described in the book, Ceran gives about 2,500 people identified by name, including about 1,300 Polish civilians and about 1,200 patients; this is not the overall toll. The Piaśnica Museum gives an estimate of 12–14 thousand people killed, while noting the difficulty of establishing the full toll.
- Perpetrators
- Institutional sources name SS-Wachsturmbann “Eimann”, Einsatzkommando 16 and the Selbstschutz. Naming formations does not determine which component carried out every transport or every execution.
- Documented methods
- arrests and transports from places of detention · mass shootings · burial in death pits · exhumation and burning of bodies to erase evidence
A murder site as part of a process
Piaśnica was not a single episode or a single death pit. Official accounts describe it as one of the main sites of execution in Pomerania. The executions of 3 November, when at least 82 Poles were shot, and of 11 November, when more than 300 people were killed, are two documented episodes in a broader process. They must not be added together as the complete toll of the site. [2] [1]
Tomasz Ceran places Piaśnica in his broader synthesis of the Pomeranian crime of 1939, understood as a scholarly term and the scope adopted by the author. This article describes only the execution site near Wejherowo; it does not extend its victim count to the whole pre-war Pomeranian Voivodeship. [1]
From detention to execution
The Piaśnica Museum describes a chain of actions: people arrested in Pomerania were taken to prisons and other places of detention, then, after interrogation, transported to the Piaśnica forests. People brought from the Reich were directed through Wejherowo. This description orders the victims’ route, but does not permit the same course to be assigned to every individual transport. [3]
The IPN names SS-Wachsturmbann “Eimann”, Einsatzkommando 16 and the Selbstschutz in connection with Piaśnica. These are components of the apparatus of perpetrators identified by an institutional source. It does not follow automatically that every person linked to a particular formation personally took part in every execution. [2]
Numbers describe different things
In his chapter on the scale of the crime, Ceran distinguishes people identified by name from estimates of the total number killed. For Piaśnica he gives about 2,500 established names: about 1,300 Polish civilians, including Polish and Kashubian intelligentsia, and about 1,200 Polish and German patients of psychiatric hospitals. This is the state of identification described in the monograph, not a closed list or the full number of victims. [1]
The Piaśnica Museum gives an estimate of 12–14 thousand people killed, chiefly representatives of the Polish intelligentsia and psychiatric hospital patients, while noting the difficulty of establishing the full toll. The established names and the estimate of the overall toll should not be treated as equivalent figures: they describe different levels of findings. That is why this article presents both levels with their limitations, rather than claiming a precision the sources do not provide. [3]
Destruction of evidence and the limits of findings
A full nominal list could not be reconstructed, among other reasons because the documentation of the local Selbstschutz was destroyed as early as 1939. Near the end of the war, the Germans exhumed and burned part of the remains. Erasing evidence limits later exhumations and means that figures from different studies must be described together with the method by which they were established. [2] [1]
According to the Piaśnica Museum, since 2011 the investigative division of the IPN in Gdańsk has conducted an investigation into the mass killings in the Piaśnica forests. This article does not replace its findings or announce a final toll before the proceedings have concluded. [3]
Limits of the findings
Piaśnica covers many executions and different victim groups. The figure of about 2,500 refers to people identified by name in the state of research described by Ceran, while the estimate of 12–14 thousand is a different type of data, not a number of confirmed names. German destruction of records and remains limits the possibility of establishing a full toll. Links to people provide context for the apparatus; they are not proof of personal participation in every execution. [1] [2] [3]
Context of the perpetrator apparatus
The links give organisational context. They are not independent evidence of personal participation in the murder described here.
- Rudolf Tröger — Context: command of Einsatzkommando 16; this does not attribute personal responsibility for every execution.
- Friedrich Class — Context: the Gdynia Gestapo/Einsatzkommando 16 branch and local selections; the sources define the scope of any specific involvement.
- Kurt Eimann — Context: command of SS-Wachsturmbann “Eimann”, named in sources on Piaśnica; this does not replace proof for every transport and site.

How we assess sources
The evidence base consists primarily of Polish scholarly publications, investigative findings, archives, museums and documented witness accounts. Reliability is assessed through the document’s provenance, scholarly method and the ability to check the finding. Statements by perpetrators and family accounts of perpetrators require especially critical comparison with other material. Two pages from the same institution may repeat one finding; they are not automatically treated as independent confirmation.
